Pacific Coast Environmental Conservancy's
Education constitution
Pacific Coast Environmental Conservancy (PCEC) is committed to providing and supporting science-
based insight, solutions and education for our modern environmental concerns.  By creating a deeper
understanding about human impacts, conservation as well developing a respect for the environment
which will help develop environmentally-thoughtful citizens.  PCEC acknowledges that young children are
the most important members of the world that will one day inherit a society that can sometimes neglect
the results and repercussions of its actions and activities on the environment.  For this and other reasons
it is important to educate our youth, as well as all members the community, on the importance in
understanding human impacts in today’s natural environment.  In a society that is continually emphasizing
new technology, PCEC is dedicated to promoting state-of-the-art scientific approaches and
technologies to help understand these problems.
Using these tools PCEC will facilitate and directly support the participation of students (K-12) and the
public in environmental studies, assessment, and other beneficial activities that lead to increased
awareness of modern environmental problems and potential solutions.  This educational component will
hopefully prepare everyone (especially students) and bring awareness for the role they will have as
decision making adults.  PCEC will engage students and the public by presenting environmental
education using real-life situations that exemplify the impact humans place on the environment every
day!  This educational component will also benefit and reach out to those who are not able to participate
in environmental studies or for underrepresented minorities, so that together we can bring the important
environmental issues that face us ALL to the forefront and work together to accomplish understanding
and solutions.

EDUCATIONAL GOALS
•  Provide opportunities to participate in ongoing environmental studies and assessment efforts

GRADUATE STUDENTS:  Graduate students will be placed in hands-on environmental studies working
closely with researchers.  Students will be conducting high level research work with a goal of publishing this work
in scientific journals.  This will enable them to be exposed to current research done in environmental studies using
new techniques and technologies.

UNDERGRADUATES:  Will be able to develop scientific research skills in hands-on environments, both in the field
and in a laboratory setting.  Students will be part of important research projects that will help them transition into a
Graduate or PhD program.

K-12: Students will be exposed to some of the current environmental issues that face us today, including the
impacts that humans place on the environment through different actions and activities.  Programs will be set up
where students can aide in data collecting and collecting, so that they engage in field research and actively
participate versus simply being lectured on it.

•  Provide small grants in aid of environmental research

•  Providing opportunities for underrepresented minorities in environmental science and education
Students who come from an underrepresented minority in science will be exposed to different environmental
areas of research as well as new technologies and state-of-the-art techniques used in environmental science.
PCEC will support these students, who otherwise not have any exposure to environmental science or state-of-the-
art research and facilitate a new area of study for them.

•  Public outreach and environmental education
It is very important that everyone know and learn about what environmental issues we are dealing with in today’
s society, especially when some of these issues directly impact people living in a particular area of interest.  PCEC
will organize and lead outreach programs to give communities and citizens information on some of the most
important environmental issues facing all of us today and what we can do/are doing to deal with such issues.
Bringing education and understanding of these issues which will hopefully bring change of current environmental
protocols and bring implementation of new strategies.

•  Partnerships with public agencies /institutions in applying state-of-the-art scientific techniques in
environmental assessment
PCEC will work hard and diligently in building strong and successful partnerships in order to face some of the
new environmental issues facing the environment today.  PCEC has already built collaborative efforts with public
agencies and institutions that have helped in developing environmental research projects to investigate the
enormous impact humans have on the environment and its affect on the organisms in those environments.

  •        SFEI: San Francisco Estuary Institute
  •        CSULB: California State University, Long Beach
  •        OCSD: Orange County Sanitation District
  •        SCCWRP: Southern California Coastal Water Research Project

•        Classroom instruction, public lectures, courses
PCEC is proud to involve itself in an educational setting to be able and expose students (K-16) to new
environmental issues brought upon by human activity and the resulting impacts on the environment.  PCEC will
conduct class visits to students (K-12) and when possible extend opportunities for students to be part of the
research by facilitating their participation in field research, data collecting and other hands-on activities.

PCEC will conduct public lectures to address environmental issues that face us all in today’s society.  Particularly,
PCEC will address communities and citizens living in areas that may be directly affected by such issues/impacts in
order to further facilitate understanding of how such problems can affect individuals, organisms and the
environment itself.  The lectures will hopefully lead to increased awareness of modern environmental problems
and possible solutions along with enhancing identification and implementation of effective mitigation strategies.
PCEC will develop an educational course that will focus on the problems facing the environment and the role
humans play in such impacts.  The course will allow students (university) to be exposed to new scientific research
occurring in environmental science.
